In general, I think Asians in Asia don’t really have a sweet tooth so in Taipei, you can expect desserts to be lighter, less sweet, and not as creamy. I do like that the desserts are not as sugary — I don’t feel like I’m going to get diabetes after eating a slice of cake. However, the ice cream here is not up-to-par with the States because it’s more icy than creamy. Fortunately, I found a place that is a great compromise between the less sweet and the creamy!
8% Ice (Facebook) (2 locations) offers gelato, sorbet and soft serve. The gelato flavors range from tea and coffee to fruits and chocolate. Sorbet flavors focus on different types of fruits while the soft serve comes in more unique flavors like sesame, red bean and soymilk.
The consistency is dense and creamy, but not overly sweet. The flavors that I tried below are full-bodied and they taste excellent!
One location is on Yongkang Street (Map) — this store is very close to a Din Tai Fung restaurant (see my previous post about it) so you can have yourself some Xiao Long Baos then head here to finish off a great dinner.
